The Tenth Rune

What I need
I achieve
with the power
to answer need

Names - NYD - need or distress, NAUTHIZ - need, NAUTHS - necessity or need, NAUDH - distress, need or constraint

Pronunciations - "not iz" or "need" "nod iz"

Phonetic Value - "N"

Symbolism - Signal Fire

Keywords - Necessity

Nyd represents the fire bow which carries flame to the "need-fire." and is symbolized as such. If you look at this rune with the idea of a cross-bow notched with a flaming arrow like a signal flare, you will begin to get the idea of the intent of this symbol

It is also said to be representative of the "spinning tree" or the windy tree which was the source of all fertility. The friction from this "spinning" brought forth the fire that combined with the cosmic ice to achieve the raw materials for transformation.

Phonetically, Nyd matches easily with present day words of similar meaning (like need) however, Nyd also contains a richer, fuller meaning that includes answering the need, or finding a solution to the need expressed in the rune.

In the rune poems Nyd represents the layered concept of necessity providing the friction that leads to transformation. Think of the oysters' need to protect itself from the constant irritation of a grain of sand. This need shapes the pearl. It is this kind of necessity leading to transformation represented by Nyd.

In this way the rune Nyd is another of the cosmic forces which is recognized as being a "shaping" power which form the fates of the world and mankind and it is associated with the Nornir who are the "shapers."

It is a rune of desire that produces the "need-fire" which drives a man or woman to obtain that which he or she desires. It is strongly associated with love magic, and the driving desires that produce not only the heat of sexual desire, but that of the desire to obtain or achieve.

Nyd is directly related to willpower, desire, and ambition. The sronger any or all of these impulses are, the greater the "shaping force" of this rune. Users of this symbol are warned that there is inherent danger in letting Nyd overpower control as Nyd without control will lead directly to the workers destruction.

If directed, and used with knowledge and wisdom, the need-fire becomes creative and procreative. If used unwisely it can become a force for destruction burning to useless ashes.

Magically it is the worker's own will that is paramont in directing the force of this rune. It can be used to obtain a lover, to elimante hate and strife, develop will and resistance, or to signal for aid.

The strength of this rune is based directly upon the strength of the will using it. If you do not direct Nyd with a strong will, you will not achieve a strong result, however it is wise to heed the warning that the willpower with which you work this rune must be equally balanced by control sufficient to prevent Nyd from "running wild".

In divination it can represent any of the following forces.

NYD UPRIGHT:Need, delays, restriction, friction, innovation, self-reliance, solutions, distress, confusion, conflict, endurance, survival, determination

NYD MERKSTAVE: Constraint, toil, drudgery, laxity, extremity, want, deprivation, starvation, poverty, denial, no solutions, stagnation, emotional hunger.
