Correspondences and Associations

Here's the deal with correspondences and associations. There may be very clear and time-honored associations with a specific deity and in some cases there may be little more than a name and a need associated with the deity leaving the rest of the correspondences and associations to be worked out for yourself. Some have been derived from ancient mythological references, some from folklore passed from mouth to mouth and generation to generation, and some from cultural references both universally accepted and geographically specific. A good example of the latter is that the color correspondence for mourning is black in Western cultures, however the color of mourning in Eastern cultures is white.

The trick is to determine for yourself which correspondence feels most appropriate. This is not to say that "anything goes", indeed there are many who take the instruction to "use what works best for you" as a perfect excuse for sloppy and unreasoned correspondences. It is not. However, neither can you blindly follow some suggestion as if it were carved in granite and therefore absolute. Use the above example to see this principle of "self reasoning" in action. If someone says you must dress for a funeral, what color outfit do you dress yourself in? Why? Yes, that's the important question and the most essential element of self reasoning. The "why" of your chosen correspondence. As long as YOU understand why you have selected certain correspondences and associations you will find greater success in your work with them.

Lunar Correspondences
Moon Phases

NEW MOON

The influence of this moon is from the first day of the New Moon to about 3 or 3 1/2 days thereafter. This energy is thought to be at peak just past high noon and is traditionally used in conjunction with new beginnings or the initiation of projects. This energy is thought to correspond well with beauty, health, self-improvement, planting, farms, gardens, new employment, new dwellings, networking, love, romance.

WAXING CRESCENT

The influence of this moon runs from 3 or 3 1/2 days after the new moon to the 7th day. The peak energy of this moon is right around mid-afternoon, 3 PM or so, and is traditionally used in conjunction with furthering the course of matters already underway and is thought to correspond well with business, change, maternal strength and emotional upsets.

WAXING QUARTER MOON

This moon's influence covers the time span from 7 to ten days after the new moon and is thought to be most powerful at the end of the day when evening begins, around 6 PM. The energy of this moon will help to continue a course of action already underway and corresponds well with luck, motivation, courage, ambition, consistency, advancement, and establishing stability.

GIBBOUS MOON

You would think, considering the orderly progression from New Moon to this point in the moon's phases, that this particular phase would be associated with things that are almost complete, or almost full, or almost at their peak, but, historically this moon has been linked with insanity, suspicion, delusions, and danger. The peak time of influence for this moon is from 10 to 13 days after the new moon and these energies will exert the greatest power after the fullness of the evening, around 9 PM. The highly unstable energies of this moon can best be used to identify and root out instabilities impacting or effecting you.

FULL MOON

The influence of this moon reigns 14 days after the new moon and is at the greatest peak of power at midnight. The energy of this moon is associated with completions, peaks, established stability, and power and corresponds well with artistic endeavors, beauty, fitness, health (or a return to health), divination and decisions, knowlege, legal matters, romance, love, motivation, protection, and magical or psychic matters,

DISSEMINATING MOON

Again, this moon is a reflection of the Gibbous Moon and therefore, doesn't seem to follow the expected orderly progression from fullness to slightly-declining fullness. Instead, this moon, which is at the peak of influence at around 3:00 AM for 3 to 7 days following the full moon, is more closely associated with addictions, divorce, emotional stress and depression. Because this moon is the beginning of the waning phase it can be used to reduce or lessen the impact of these events or effects in your life.

WANING QUARTER MOON

This moon's influence extends from 7 to 10 days after the full moon and is at it's peak when the day begins, around 6 AM. The energies of this moon correspond most closely with change, breaking down barriers, dis-establishment, reduction, recycling, and revision.

WANING CRESCENT MOON

The influence of this moon lasts from 10 to 13 days after the full moon and it peaks at mid-morning, around 9 AM. This moon's energy corresponds well with final details, finishing touches, approaching endings, judgements, completions, conclusions, divorce, and letting go.

DARK MOON

This moon holds sway on the last day of the current moonphase (approximately 14 to 14 1/2 days after the full moon) and is at its greatest strength as mid-day approaches, just before noon. This isn't actually as contrary as it sounds considering that the dark moon is not visible to the human eye, and nothing will help conceal moonlight like a blast of high noon sunlight. The energy of this moon corresponds with hidden things, secrets and their discovery, concealments, banishments, death, change, finality and endings of all kinds.

Lunar Correspondences
Astrological Moon Signs

MOON IN ARIES

An Aries moon is good for initiating projects and getting things started as well as any matter specific to the self or your public persona. There is great energy associated with this moon, however, it may be easily scattered and is best used for matters which can be accomplished quickly.

MOON IN TAURUS

A Taurus moon is an excellent time to work with issues of comfort, finance, and matters of personal benefit. Things undertaken now will last longest, be firmly established, and tend to increase in value. Because this is a long lasting influence it is well to take warning that any work begun during this moon sign will be difficult to alter or undo later.

MOON IN GEMINI

The Gemini moon is most appropriate for communication, writing, mass media, and the exchange of ideas. The mercurial nature of this moon sign is an indicator, however, that things begun during this moon sign may suddenly change and even reverse or be very susceptible to outside influences.

MOON IN CANCER

The Cancer moon is the most fertile moon sign in the zodiac and is best used for nurturing, mothering, family, home, comfort, planting and growing. The influence of this moon sign powerfully encourages any type of growth or increase and so care must be taken that this growth doesn't get out of hand, run rampant, and lead to decay.

MOON IN LEO

A Leo moon is governed by the vibrant power of the sun and will find its best use in those matters revolving around showmanship, center stage, taking the spotlight, leadership and celebrity. This moon sign is magnanimous in nature but it can also lead to self indulgence and corruption.

MOON IN VIRGO

The Virgo moon is the pickiest and most detail oriented of the moon signs and it is because of this that the energies of this moon are used for work-related issues, health matters, education, and volunteerism as they will benefit the most from the fastidious cerebral nature of this moon sign. While this moon sign is famous for conscientous attention to detail, care must be taken that this influence doesn't slip over into micro-managing, nit-picking, or obsessive attention to unimportant details.

MOON IN LIBRA

The Libra moon increases self-awareness through the attainment of balance. The energies of this moon sign lend themselves to interaction with others, diplomacy, marriage, partnerships, fairness and justice. The easy grace and diplomacy of this moon sign is well known and the only cautionary note associated with it is that of the kind of delays referenced in the phrase "Justice delayed is justice denied."

MOON IN SCORPIO

The Scorpio moon is a perceptive detective and well suited to dealing with all matters of secrets, the hidden, occult wisdom, divination, and transformation. Because this moon sign is ruled by Pluto, there is an association with death, taxes, inheritance, personal promotion, and ambition. The fixed water nature of this moon sign indicates that deep feelings rule the day and therefore this sign is susceptible to holding grudges or seeking vengeance.

MOON IN SAGITTARIUS

A Sagittarius moon is a philosophical and nonconformist kind of energy and, as such, is an excellent time to work with new or unexpected methodologies. Religion, metaphysical matters, imagination, confidence, and higher education are all influenced by this moon sign. Because this is an optimistic and expansive kind of energy, care must be taken not to accept too many challenges or to underestimate the demands of present challenges.

MOON IN CAPRICORN

The Capricorn moon promotes the kind of stable energy best suited to matters of material concerns, boundaries, structure, discipline, reputation, career, and honor. Since this moon phase is so easily aligned with limitations, it is fairly easy for this energy to spill over into feelings of unworthiness and depression unless care is taken to channel it into the kind of grounding and centering activities more suited to these energies.

MOON IN AQUARIUS

An Aquarius moon is well known for aspirations to a higher consciousness, grand humanistic themes such as world peace and understanding, and an awareness of the human condition so, the energies of this moon sign lend themselves very well to associations with fraternal groups or social service agencies. Organizations, clubs and groups all working toward a common altruistic end are well suited to the energies of this moon sign. Just be careful that they don't wander off into some sort of swell-headed tendency toward hype filled psuedo-intellectualism.

MOON IN PISCES

The Pisces moon is a dreamer and this energy is most suited to inner development, divination, karma, secrets revealed, and bridging the gap between the inner and outer worlds, or the spiritual and material planes. Since the energy of this moon sign is somewhat withdrawn and disengaged it can easily be pushed over into melancholic emotionalism and care should be excercised so as not to waste the great sensitivities of this moon-sign by masking these emotions with drugs, alcohol, or overindulgence in other intoxicants

MOON VOID OF COURSE

There will be times in the journey of the moon when it has touched the final planet in the sign it is passing through on it's orbit through the zodiac, but, has not yet contacted the first planet of the next zodiac sign on this pathway. These times are referred to as "Void Of Course" and it is thought that actions taken during a void course will invariably need to be undone or completely re-done. This does not, however, make this lunar eccentricity utterly useless, in fact, many find these moments in the lunar pathway to be a most excellent time to return those calls to business or social associations you don't really want to further, or to initiate plans for projects you really don't want to see completed without appearing openly uncooperative. In short, the moon's Void of Course seems to be the universe's version of "crossed fingers". Lunar Voids of Course happen just prior to the moon entering a new astrological sign and generally don't last for much more than the last few hours out of every sign the moon transits.

Color Correspondences

Colors are uniquely powerful symbols. In magic, they also contain power that can be of use during ritual.

There are many systems linking colors with specific magical energies. The following is a compilation of different traditions, including American folk magic, Norse traditions, Egyptian traditions, Western Mystic tradition, and some Eastern Mystic traditions.

RED

Maintaining health, strength, physical energy, sex, passion, courage, protection. Widely used in defensive magic. The color of the element of Fire. Red is associated with blood (and thus, life and death), birth, volcanoes, and intense emotions. The Zuni of America linked this color with the South. Throughout Polynesia, red was a sacred color associated with both the deities and with the highest social classes

PINK

Love, friendship, compassion, relaxation. Pink is symbolic of gentle emotions and of emotional unions. It's less intense than red

ORANGE

General attraction, energy. Orange is a lesser aspect of red

YELLOW

Intellect, confidence, divination, communication, eloquence, travel, movement. Yellow is the color of the element of Air. It symbolizes the sun, grain, and the power of thought. To the Zuni, it symbolized the North. In Polynesia, yellow was a color of royalty and divinity

GREEN

Money, prosperity, employment, fertility, healing, growth. Green is the color of the element of Earth and symbolizes our planet's fertility (it's the color of chlorophyll) as well as life itself

BLUE

Healing, peace, psychism, patience, happiness. Blue is the color of the element of Water. Symbolic of the ocean, sleep, twilight, and the sky. The Zuni employed this color to represent-the West

PURPLE

Power, healing severe disease, spirituality, meditation, religion. Purple was once a European symbol of royalty; today it symbolizes the divine

WHITE

Protection, purification, all purposes. Symbolic of the moon, freshness, snow, cold, and potential. Because white contains all colors, it can be utilized for every magical purpose. White symbolized the East to the Zuni and is the color of mourning in parts of the far east

BLACK

Banishing negativity, absorbing negativity. Symbolizes outer space and the universe. Black is the absence of colors. In some cultures, black represented fertility (as in quite fruitful black earth); in others, wisdom. In our culture it has been curiously linked with evil, due to religious associations. It is not an evil color, however it is the color of mourning in much of western civilization

BROWN

Animals. Used for spells involving animals, usually in combination with other colors. Brown also represents soil and, to a lesser degree, fertility of the Earth

Wood, Tree, and Vine Correspondences

The use of wood in magical, divinatory or meditational work has a long tradition. It is important to note that the most successful work with wooden staves or wands have been "gifts" from the forest. Seldom does one find favor with the spirit of the wood by hauling an axe into such sacred spaces and wounding a living dweller therein for a branch or two. It is considered a return courtesy to make an offering of your own when gifted with a tool from nature. A little water at the base of the tree where you found your gift wouldn't at all be inappropriate.
